Today we live in a world where it is not okay to have opposing views. We live in a world where you can sit behind the comfort of your computer screen and throw attacks at people different from you. We live in a world where it’s okay to see a person, a human, a soul as something other than a person, a human, or a soul.
I’m not even sure what to say. There are a lot of issues that really push buttons in society, but is that seriously an excuse to spew hatred every chance we get?
Unity and peace is a great idea, but it will never happen. Because the hate will never stop. Little things will keep exploding into big things and we will continue labeling other people as stupid, worthless, racist, sexist, and different.
Difference should be a celebration, not a divide.
So maybe you’re black and I’m white. That’s so cool we have different backgrounds and ancestors from unique areas. That’s so cool our cultures are a little bit different. That’s so not cool that the color of our skin makes us enemies in a group setting.
So maybe you’re a Republican and I’m a registered independent. That’s so cool we look at the world differently. That’s so cool our parents and upbringing might have influenced our thoughts and shaped our ideas. That’s so not cool that the unique thoughts of our unique brains make us enemies.
I don’t know what to say. I no longer know how to calmly turn away from the divide. But I also don’t know how to unite us.
I don’t know how to convince you that we are all unique, precious souls made in the image of a perfect God that loves each of us equally.
I don’t know how to convince you to put away your condemnation and actually have a conversation.
I don’t know how to make you see that your neighbor might be different, but he or she is also significant.
I just don’t know.
